Richard Hunt Obituary

Richard “Dick” Allen Hunt, 82 of Carp Lake (Hebron Twp.) passed away on May 24, 2025 at his home.

Dick was born on December 23, 1942 in Rochester, New York, the son of Robert Allen and Edna Mae (Birge) Hunt and was raised in Rochester, NY, graduating from high school in in Penifeld, MA with the Class of 1960. 

On May 13, 1972, Dick married the love of his life, the former Jean Olson in Detroit, MI and the two made their home in Northern Michigan.  For 32 years, Dick was the Owner and Operator of the Mackinaw Pastie Shop in Mackinaw City, which he then passed on to his children. 

Dick lived by his life’s motto: “Anything worth doing is worth doing to excess.”  Dick did not have a college engineering degree, but mentally he saw how everything worked and could make or fix anything.  He was always an active man and enjoyed snowmobiling, motorcycling, skiing, downhill ski racing, riding his bicycle, sports cars, singing with the Northmen Gospel Choir, playing hockey, and volunteering at local food pantries.  His greatest joy in life was help raising his children and grandchildren.

Dick is survived by his wife, Jean; 3 children, Donna Jean Hunt, Robert Allen Hunt II, and Rodney Allen Hunt-Chimner; 2 grandchildren, Lucas Allen Hunt and Lilian Jean Hunt; and by 2 siblings, Bruce (Diane) Hunt and Dianne (George) Hartman.

There will be a Celebration of Dick‘s Life on June 5th at 1pm at the Church if the Straits in Mackinaw City.  Per the family’s request, because we are CELEBRATING his life, please leave your mourning clothes at home and come in bright and happy attire.  If sending floral remembrances, plants are welcome.
