Robert John Burskey, 72 of Harbor Springs, Michigan, passed away peacefully September 14, 2021, at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey, surrounded by his loving wife, children, and several other family members. He had worked tirelessly over the past several months to recover following open heart surgery in February, however, was weakened by a recent infection and other health challenges.
Robert was born May 28th, 1949, in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Stanley and Audrey (Seleskey) Burskey, where he also spent his childhood. On February 21, 2004, he married his wife Maureen at the historical Meadow Brook Hall in Rochester, Michigan. Over the next several years they lived in Northville and then Ann Arbor, Michigan while spending as much time as possible at their home in Harbor Springs where they were elated to finally move to permanently in 2019.
Robert found success early in his career working as an insurance agent and quickly became known as an industry legend as the founder of Ann Arbor Annuity Exchange, a successful and innovative national insurance marketing organization, that he would eventually sell in 2006 to one of the worlds largest insurance companies. He continued that entrepreneurial spirit and built multiple businesses throughout the following years. Most recently acquiring the Simon Insurance Agency in Portland, Michigan.
When he wasn’t working, he loved traveling the Great Lakes on his boat, hunting at his farm in Posen, Michigan, and cooking for his family. He had a passion for history, watching black and white movies-especially old westerns, and was always up for a good debate. Anyone who knew Robert was touched by his generosity, humor, passion for life and ability to lead and mentor those around him.
He is survived by his wife, Maureen; children, Theresa (Kevin) Meyer of Brighton, MI; Rosemary (David) Lewis of Ann Arbor, MI; and Zachary Burskey of Ann Arbor, MI; stepchildren, Bridget (Brian) Bennane-Lee of Italy, and Conor (Ally Baldwin) Bennane of Harbor Springs, MI; brothers, Richard (Jackie) Burskey of Brighton, MI, Russell Burskey and Rodger Burskey; grandchildren, Andrew and Audrey Meyer, and Blake and Devin Lewis; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and beloved friends.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents; Audrey and Stanley; sister, Martha; and brother Ralph.
