Robert "Bert" Notestine of Petoskey Michigan entered into the presence of his Savior on March 30, 2021 after a brief illness. He died at his home with his son Jerod (Joy) Notestine and close friends.
Bert was born to Robert Stanley Notestine and Matilda Manthei May 2, 1949 in Petoskey, Michigan where is spent most of his life. He graduated from Petoskey High school where he was recognized as an outstanding football player.
Bert’s life is defined by Faith, Humility, Integrity, Love of country. He attended DeVry University and Central Michigan University graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Broadcast Communications. He worked for the Health Department of Northwest Michigan as an Educator retiring after 37 years. After retirement he worked at the Petoskey State Park in maintenance during the time it was rated number 1 in the State later driving school bus for Fletch’s.
The theme of Berts life has been Community service, He was a leader with the Future Farmers of America, a founding member of H.A.N.D.S. (HIV AIDS Network & Direct Services), served as a County Commissioner, a Bear Creek Township Trustee, he was appointed to the Emmet county Road Commission Board. He served proudly in the Army National Guard from 1970-1975. He was always taking someone in... multiple exchange students over the years, which although Jerod was an only child never left him feeling that way, he has siblings around the world. Bert would let people stay with him if they had a need, sometimes for a couple days weeks or months.
He collected military vehicles and fire trucks, you could always see Bert driving his Duce and a Half in local parades dressed in uniform and proudly supporting veterans and country.
Bert was a proud member of the Resort Bear Creek Fire Departments rising to the position of Deputy Chief. He was committed to excellence in all he did whether mentoring young men and women for fire service, protecting community and firefighters while on a scene. Of course, he was the presenter of the Hoser Award at the annual Training and meeting of the department, which on occasion he had to give to himself.
Bert was a man of deep faith, he daily read his Bible and various devotionals. He was a Member of Zion Lutheran church in Petoskey and served as its congregational President, an active Trustee serving in both roles for numerous terms as well as participating in church life.
Bert was a man of Charity and giving of time talent and treasure for which he will long be remembered. As friends and community, you will honor him most by picking up the mantle that he is passing to you of faith, kindness and service to one another as well as community.
There will be a visitation Friday April 9, from 6-8pm at Zion Lutheran Church with funeral service Saturday April 10 at 11am at Zion Lutheran Church Petoskey with burial in Greenwood cemetery.
