Robert "Bob" W. Schneider

Robert “Bob” Schneider, 79, of Indian River Michigan, died January 7, 2022 in his home surrounded by his loved ones. He was born December 1, 1942, the son of Kenneth Schneider and Alice Schneider.

In 1960, Bob graduated from Dexter High School where he played football, basketball and ran track.    Bob married his high school sweetheart Martha Lee (Marty) Hoey on September 11, 1965 and proceeded to raise their four children, Tricia, Terri, Kim and Bobby in Dexter and Elk Rapids.  Bob and Marty became foster parents in 1967.  Through the years they welcomed and nurtured 15 children into their home. After a career ending injury in his trade occupation, Bob resumed his education at Ferris State University and graduated in 1980. In 1981, he started teaching social studies in Elk Rapids where he retired in 2005. For 20+ years, Bob coached middle school boys and girls track. He also coached girls’ basketball for 17 years turning into a perennial power. He was a celebrated teacher, coach, and co-worker.  One of his passions was aiding and nurturing the young students and athletes of the ER Elks.  In 2006, he was inducted into the Elk Rapids Sports Hall of Fame.

In his later years, Bob enjoyed spending time with his seven grandchildren, baking bread daily, reading, listening to music, doing crossword puzzles, manicuring his yard, tending to his sweet peas, woodworking in his shop and sharing a meal with loved ones.  Aside from his family, his true joy was watching sports, especially the University of Michigan football and basketball teams…he bled maize and blue. Bob’s wardrobe consisted mainly of U of M attire.

Bob is survived by his wife Marty of 56 years, their children Tricia Schneider of Elk Rapids, Bobby (Maria) Schneider of Elk Rapids and Terri (Jason) Vizina of Indian River, his grandchildren, Lauren Vizina, Olivia, Katie and Molly Monthei of Indian River and Kaden, Caleb and Jase Schneider of Elk Rapids, his sister Sue (Don) Cole of Idaho, many nieces, nephews, brother in-laws and sister in-laws. Bob is preceded in death by his sweet daughter, Kimberly Schneider Monthei and his parents, Kenneth Schneider and Alice Schneider, mother-in-law Frances Hoey, sister-in-law Darlene Hoey and brother-in-law Allen Hoey.

Visitation will take place at the Cross in the Woods Catholic Shrine, Tuesday January 11, 2022 between 1:00-2:00 pm, with a funeral mass celebration immediately following at 2:00 pm.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to ERBA (check to Elk Rapids Basketball Association) or Inland Lakes Varsity Girls Basketball program (check to Inland Lakes Schools).
