Russell MaGee, 77, of Boyne Falls, Michigan, passed away on April 20, 2023. He was born on August 26, 1945, to Ava Roy Magee and Louise MaGee (Pearson), who both preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his brother Leslie MaGee. He is survived by his niece, Amy Louise MaGee, and his special lady friend Linda Pitts. As well as his sister-in-law Sue.
Russell MaGee spent most of his life in Boyne Falls, where he was raised by Louise. He attended Boyne Falls Public Schools, Class of 1963. Following graduation, he attended Northern Michigan University, Class of 1969, pursuing teaching after graduation. Russell taught school for 28.5 years at Onaway Public Schools and retired in 1997.
Throughout his life, Russell was very active in coaching the Onaway Girls Track Team and spent many years as an MHSAA Track Official. He had a great love for sports and was always willing to help in any way he could. Russell spent summers at Young State Park, keeping the peace as a Park Ranger for 19 summers. Russell was appointed to the Charlevoix County Road Commission in 2011 and made Chairman of the Commission in 2017 until now. His wisdom and practical attitude towards life showed through many decisions made by the board.
He was also known for his love of the outdoors and hunting and looked forward to trips with friends to South Dakota to hunt pheasant, and was able to live his lifelong dream with a trip to Newfoundland to hunt woodland caribou and moose. Russell served as treasurer and secretary of the Black Mountain Hunting Club, est 1976.
He will be remembered for his wry sense of humor, his quick wit, and fun-loving pranks. He enjoyed spending time with friends and family, especially at Deer Camp making those fantastic hobo stews. He always had a smile on his face and a hand to lend to friends. Russell was known for his kindness and love for his friends and family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Visitation will be on April 25th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Stackus Funeral Home in Boyne City. The funeral service will be at 1:00 PM on April 26 at the Boyne Falls United Methodist Church, with burial to occur directly after the service.
