Suzanne Straley

On Sunday February 2, 2020, Suzanne Straley, loving wife, mother and grandmother, surrounded by her family, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Suzanne was born November 3rd, 1937 in Flint, MI to Homer and Beryl Strahle.  She received her degree in Liberal Arts from the University of Michigan in 1958 and began teaching geography, Spanish and French at Grand Blanc High School in Michigan. On July 27th 1959 she married the love of her life, James E. Straley DDS.  They raised three children, Jim Jr., Jeff, and Jennifer in Flushing, MI. 

For many years Suzanne had a passion for health and fitness.  As an accomplished tennis player and golfer she turned her attention to running, cycling and swimming while in her 40’s. In 1989 at the age of 53 she qualified, competed in and completed one of the most grueling tests of endurance in the Ironman Triathlon in Hawaii. She was also known for her quick wit and compassionate nature to all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her son Jim, Jr. (November 2019), parents Homer and Beryl, and brother Tom.

She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years Jim, sister-in-law Margaret, son Jeff (Rhonda), daughter Jennifer (Christian), grandchildren Lauren, Juliyana, and Aeryn. Nephews and nieces residing in Florida are Stephen James (Jodi) Straley, Craig Allen (Diane) Straley, Stuart John Straley, and Cynthia Louise Straley.

The family would like to say a special thank you to the doctors and nurses of McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey, especially nurse Sandy Novotny of the Critical Care Unit. Sandy provided exceptional, respectful & compassionate care to Sue and her entire family.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday February 8th at Petoskey United Methodist Church. Visitation will be at 10:30 a.m., service at 11:00 a.m. and a luncheon to follow.
