Vaughn Temple Obituary

Vaughn Morrell Temple passed away May 27, 2023, at MyMichigan Medical Center in Alpena with his family at his side.

Vaughn was born April 6, 1946, the son of Leonard and Helen (France, Temple) Smith. He graduated from Cheboygan Catholic High School in 1965 and joined the United States Army where he was stationed in Germany from 1966-1968 and reached the rank of sergeant. On September 14, 1968 he married Barbara Skowten, and they enjoyed 51 years together, until her death in April 2020.

Vaughn was employed by several local companies during his career, including Kroger, Cheboygan Lumber, and Mackinaw Apartments where he was the property manager at the time of his retirement. He also owned his own business, doing household maintenance and cleaning. Vaughn was proud of the City of Cheboygan and he sat on the Cheboygan City Council and various committees from 1998-2006 and 2012-2016.

Vaughn enjoyed classic cars and was a member of the original Cheboygan Classic Car Club and Cheboygan Street Rods. He also enjoyed speed skating, playing cards and games, walking, and watching his grandchildren grow up. He never missed a soccer game, concert, opening night, awards ceremony, or the chance to spoil them.

He is survived by his wife, Susan (Stonehouse, Johnson) Temple, his son, Leonard “Lenny” (Brenda) Temple, two granddaughters that were his pride and joy; Chantel and Hallie Temple, step-children Brian Johnson, Daniel (Yana) Johnson, Sara (Andrew) Johnston; step-grandchildren Alexander (Destiny) Johnson, Nora and Nolan Johnson, and Clara Bredengerd. Also surviving are sisters-in-law Colleen (Denny) Temple, Kay (Clary) O’Connor, and Michelle (Henry) Ridgeway; brother-in-law Kenneth (MaryKaye) Stonehouse, nieces and nephews Denny (Alicia) Temple, Nathan Temple, Josh Temple, Ashley (Gil) Steiner, CJ O’Connor, Trisha Ridgeway, Bill Skowten, Christi (Jim) Slater, Annalee, Emmalee and their families as well as numerous cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 51 years Barbara Temple (Skowten), his step-father Allen Smith, his brother Denny Temple, brother-in-law William “Bill” Skowten, and Linda King, a cousin who was like a sister to him.
