Veronica Stanton Zinkosky (nee Stanton)
05/14/1938 – 04/04/2025
Veronica Stanton Zinkosky (nee Veronica Irene Stanton), widow of Alexander J. Zinkosky, passed
peacefully in her sleep in the company of her beloved children, Mina Veronese and George
Zinkosky. She was the last surviving child of Margaret (Nagy) and Leslie J.J. Stanton; she was
predeceased by her sisters Louise M. Trujillo (Louis), Donna J. Wendt (Richard), Alice E. Szabo
(Richard), and Celia M. Geisey. She is survived by her children, grandchildren Esme and Nico
Veronese, by her many nieces and nephews, and their many children.
Born in Purseglove, West Virginia, she and her family moved to Detroit during WWII following the
death of her father in a coal mining accident. She lived in the same house on 25th street in Detroit
for 40+ years. As a teen and young woman, she was an active member of Immanuel Presbyterian
Church, loved playing field hockey, baseball, basketball and swimming, and was a huge (huge!!)
fan of the Detroit Red Wings. Throughout her life, she encouraged and supported her many
nieces and nephews in their endeavors in these sports, as well as teaching quite a few how to
handle manual transmission cars (for which, they are grateful, as she had LOTS of patience). She
worked as a bookkeeper for many small businesses, and later retired from Mazda.
In their retirement, she moved with her husband and children to Cheboygan, where she became
an active member in the Eagles. She had a great circle of friends, worked the Eagles Bingo nights
for many years, took up painting, and loved hosting dinner and card nights with her friends and
family. She loved canning, baking, and cooking for large family gatherings; often hosting her
extended family over long holiday weekends, where they “camped out” in her large family room.
As she slowed down, she learned how to FaceTime, discovered Facebook, continued to bake,
and took to watching the birds gather on the deck, in the company of her nieces and pets, who
were like family members.
She was gentle, funny, and kind and a good and thoughtful friend. She was also strong willed and
had no concerns about standing up for what was right and honorable, and regularly did. She was
extremely proud of her children, their accomplishments, and adventurous nature. She will be
greatly missed and remembered for her apple pie, her contagious laughter, and how well she
nurtured her family, both immediate and extended.
A celebration in remembrance of her life is planned to be held the afternoon of July 14th
at Benton Township Community Center. In lieu of flowers, donations to UNICEF, the Cheboygan Humane
Society, or any Veteran’s support organization is preferred. Or plant a tree that gives birds a
place to nest or gather food
