Victor "Vic" Shanley

Victor Lynn “Vic” Shanley, 83 of Conway, MI, died at his home surrounded by his family on September 3, 2020.

Vic was born on June 14, 1937 in Petoskey, the son of Wilford and Fiance (Kauffman) Shanley and graduated from Petoskey High School.  He then attended Michigan State University for 2 years before going to Barber School in Florida.   Vic entered the United States Navy in 1959 and was stationed in Japan.  He received his honorable discharge in 1962.

On September 25, 1965, Vic married the former Carol Beth Onyika in Gary, Indiana and the two made their home in Petoskey.  Vic owned and operated Vic’s Clip Shop in Petoskey and proudly served for many years as a Board Member of Char-Em, the Zoning Board of Appeals for Emmet County and Little Traverse Township, and sat on the Board of the Harbor Springs Sewer Authority.     He was a member of the Petoskey United Methodist Church and a Past-Master and Lifetime Member of the Petoskey Masonic Lodge No 344. Vic enjoyed gardening, camping, and Traveling.

Vic is survived by his wife, Carol Shanley; Daughter, Beth (Chris) Goodwin; son, Kirk Shanley; grandchildren, Tyler Goodwin, Zachary (Kasey) Goodwin, Anson Goodwin, Amanda (Brett) Hutcheon, Synjin Shanley, and Zander Shanley, brother, Gary (Linda) Shanley; brother-in-law, John Mish; and by many nieces and nephews and by a boat-load of cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter-in-law, Tracy Shanley; and by 3 siblings, Wilford Shanley, and his wife, Joyce Shanley, Beverly Mish, and Nadine Sheldon and her husband, Paul Sheldon.

A memorial celebrating Vic’s life will be held at the Petoskey United Methodist Church on October 16th at 11am.  Vic will be laid to rest at Greenwood Cemetery in Petoskey.

Those wishing to honor Vic’s memory are asked to make a donation to the McLaren Hospice of Petoskey.
