Virginia Marie (Shananaquet) Schansema

Virginia Marie (Shananaquet) Schansema, age 51, of Levering, Michigan passed away January 4 ,2022.

She was born in Cheboygan, Michigan to Samuel and Nancy Shananaquet. She graduated from Pellston High School. She was a member of the Little Traverse Bay Band.

She is survived by her mother Nancy Shananaquet; her husband Ron Schansema; her 3 boys: Xavier, Dominic and Frankie all of Levering; her extended boys; her brothers; Paul (Beth) Shananaquet, Justin (Chris) Shananaquet and Norman (Karen) Shananaquet all from Beaver Dam, Wisc.; hers sisters Marilyn (Patrick) Hume of Pellston, Mary (Gary) Powell of Indian River­, Sherry Shananaquet of Harbor Springs and Ronda (Chuck) Ellis of Petoskey; her sisters-in-law Karen (Sam) Shananaquet of Beaver Dam. Wisc., and Ophelia (Albert) Nez of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; her aunts and uncles: Dorothy and Don Boda of Brutus, Tom and Diane Naganashe of Harbor Springs and Jim and Arlene Naganashe of Petoskey.

She is preceded in death by her father Samuel Shananaquet; her brothers Sam of Beaver Dam, Wisc. and Albert of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; her nephew­ Derek (Nez) Shananaquet Sullivan Sherron of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin; and many nieces, nephews and cousins from all over the world.

She was a Traditional/Ceremonial Jingle Dress Dancer. She loved doing bead work, crafts, drumming, singing, going to Pow-Wows and craft shows and spending time with family and friends.

She will be missed by her smile, friendship and love she had for everyone. Especially her dogs: Daisy, Drako and Roxie.

A funeral service for Virginia will be on January 8, 2021 at Stone Funeral Home in Petoskey at 4:00 PM. A visitation will begin at 2:30PM.
