Walter Algenstedt Obituary

Walter Jarrell Algenstedt passed away on September 26, 2022, in Cheboygan, MI.  Walt was born on January 6, 1939 to Harvey and Gurndalene (Jarrell) Algenstedt in Rogers City, MI.
After graduating high school, Walt joined the US Navy and proudly served his country. Following his honorable discharge, Walt pursued a variety of careers:  beginning out on the freighters for United Steel, then working as a mechanic for Proctor & Gamble before returning to the water as a seaman on Mississippi River barges.  Returning to Michigan he joined the Detroit Free Press as a motor carrier.  He then pursued his certification and served as a paramedic.  He eventually retired from driving for Sysco in 2002.
Walt married his wife Barbara in 1994.  They enjoyed a passion for travel, and made their way across the country, enjoying many road trips.  Walt loved to be active, especially outdoors, with hunting, fishing and gardening being among his favorite activities.  He was a very talented wood-worker, and spent many hours in his wood-shop making a variety of special keepsakes. Walt was a familiar face for many years at the hospital volunteering as a greeter, as well as volunteering through St Paul’s United Methodist Church.
Walt is survived by his wife, Barbara.  His daughters: Marianne (Jim) Daugherty, Susan (Gary) Oliverson, Lisa (Ron) Freel.  His step-children: Dave Deeter, Darrin (Trisha) Deeter, Doug (Amy) Deeter and DeLaine (Gary) Christie.  His grandchildren:  Katherine (Eric) Peters, Jennifer (Doug) Sayers, Anna (Jon) Clause, Andrew Freel, Abigail Freel, Travis Charbonneau, Chelsea Charbonneau (Corey), Monica (Josh) Duty, Sarah (Peter) Waldorf, Megan Deeter, Andrew Deeter, Justin Deeter, Alex Deeter, Adam Deeter, Austin (Katie) Christie, Garrett Christie and Amelia Christie; as well as nine great grandchildren.  Also surviving are his siblings Veronica Hunt and Wayne Algenstedt.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Geri, his brother Wesley, his sister Gayanne, his brother-in-law John Hunt and special canine companions Kelly and Morgan.

Services will be held at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Cheboygan on Saturday, October 1, 2022, at 11am with visitation beginning at 10am.  A luncheon will follow at the church.  Burial will take place at a later time.
