Walter Harbus Obituary

Walter A. Harbus , age 84 passed away on November 25, 2025.

Beloved husband of Susan Harbus (Elliott) for nearly 63 years. Cherished father of Walter (April) Harbus and Kimberly (Harry Hartunian) Harbus. Adored grandfather of Victoria Harbus and Christina Harbus. Loving brother of Cheryl Hornik, the late Gary Harbus and the late Valerie Wichtner. Dear son of the late Walter and the late Virginia Harbus.

Walter was born in Detroit, but was raised in Cross Village, Michigan. He graduated in 1959 from Harbor Springs High School in Harbor Springs, Michigan. He moved to the Metro Detroit area and began a career as a Clinton Township Police Officer, which he enjoyed for three years.  Walter then, in 1964, began working for Ford Motor Company, at the Sterling Axle Plant in Sterling Heights. He subsequently graduated from Macomb Community College's trade school program as a Journeyman Millwright. Walter worked at Ford's for over 40 years.  He was a very proud member of U.A.W. Local 228, where he held a number of appointed and elected positions.  He was the U.A.W. Benefits Representative for almost 15 years, until he retired.  Walter also was an enthusiastic amateur ham radio operator (WD8AXZ) and enjoyed playing billiards.  He was an active and loyal member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, #1269, the American Legion Post 0004, and the Harbor Springs Outdoors Club.  Walter and his wife Susan were also the proud owners and operators of Webbers Gift Shop located in Cross Village for many years, following in the tradition set by his grandparents Alex and Sophie Webber.  Walter had a wide range of interests, but his family was always his priority.  He will be greatly missed by many.

Mass will be celebrated 11:00 am Thursday, December 4, 2025 at Holy Cross Church in Cross Village with visitation being held from 10:00 am until the time of the service.  Fr. Roman Mitchell will be serving as celebrant.  Burial will be held in the spring at Holy Cross Cemetery.
