Walter W. Naumer, Jr., 89, passed away on April 9, 2025. He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and public servant.
Walter was born in DuQuoin, Illinois to Walter W. Naumer, Sr. and Nancy Barber Naumer. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jacob Naumer.
Walter was the beloved husband of Betsy Clink Naumer, his wife and partner of 62 years. He is survived by his wife, his daughters Beth Wickliffe, Mindy Naumer and Sarah Galioto, and his seven grandchildren.
Walter earned both his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Michigan. Between degrees, he served in the United States Navy as a chief petty officer. He remained a loyal supporter of the university and its sports teams throughout his life.
Professionally, Walter was Vice President of the DuQuoin Packing Company and served as a director of the DuQuoin State Bank. He also served for a number of years as a member and chairman of the Illinois State Board of Education, in which capacity he worked to improve educational access and standards.
Walter was active in his community and church. He served as a deacon, session member, and treasurer of the DuQuoin Presbyterian Church.
Later in life, he and Betsy relocated to Douglas Lake in Levering, Michigan. There, he was a member of the Church of the Straits in Mackinaw City, Michigan, and served as a treasurer of the Douglas Lake Improvement Association.
Walter will be remembered and missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
A memorial service at the Church of the Straits in Mackinaw City as well as a celebration of life are being planned for July 2025.
