William Rowan Kirby, a Harbor Springs and Florida resident, passed peacefully at Bay Bluffs Care Facility on March 31, 2025. William, a well-recognized amateur golfer, spent his early career as a police officer for the City of Grand Blanc, Michigan.
He was a generous, caring, gregarious individual who dedicated the last round of his life caring for the loved ones he adored and who adored him. William was generous to a fault, going out of his way to help others without expecting anything in return. His stately stature allowed him to be easily recognizable and due to his gregarious nature, it was difficult to travel anywhere and not encounter someone with whom he had previously crossed paths. During his career as a police officer, he was more likely to help someone arrive home safely as opposed to write a citation. He received numerous commendations from the department for various acts of kindness and also off-duty recognition for his quick thinking life-saving response. He rose to the position of Sergeant. Many serious and some outrageously comical stories have surfaced regarding this period in his life (e.g., exactly how did he wind up in the back seat of his police cruiser).
As a youngster William discovered a talent for golf and his love of the game was born. A former member of Bay Harbor Golf Club, Boyne Highlands, and Petoskey Bayview Country Club, he enjoyed golfing throughout the United States and internationally, especially enjoying St. Andrews where he often said it all started. His humorous nature and natural golfing abilities earned him friends far and wide with backgrounds to match. A fierce competitor, William combined golf and policing to benefit the department and community through golf competitions.
Because of his caring nature he frequently could be heard saying, “What is so hard about being nice.” He certainly followed his own advice as he gave of himself freely. His final resting spot will be alongside his father at Evergreen Cemetery in Grand Blanc, Michigan.
A ceremony is scheduled to be set mid-June with family and close friends at his side.
William was preceded in death by his father and mother Harold and Thelma Kirby, his sister Bonnie Kirby Losano and brother Richard Kirby. Survivors include Monica Graham, sister Mary Kirby Bedore, brother John Kirby, nieces and nephews.
Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
