William Platten Obituary

William J. Platten, of Cheboygan, Michigan, born in Detroit, Michigan, September 30,1936, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2024 at McLaren Hospital in Petoskey, Michigan with loved ones around him. Bill deeply touched the lives of many as a loving son, brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. Bill was a graduate of Shrine of the Little Flower Catholic High School in Royal Oak, Michigan and Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Bill owned and operated his own insurance agency throughout his 60+ year working career. He built a successful business based on relationships and customer service. Attending to his many clients' needs was his great joy and Bill always emphasized how much he loved his work. Bill was a member of the Detroit Athletic Club since 1967 and a member of the Mackinac Island Yacht Club since 1974, serving as the Commodore from 2000-2001. Bill and his wife Roberta purchased their log cabin on the Straits-of-Mackinac in northern Michigan in 1968, which became and continues to be the family’s holiday destination. Bill enjoyed hunting, photography, music, movies, traveling and personally mentoring young people on their life’s path. Spending time with his much-loved family and dear friends at Point Nipigon Resort Club in northern Michigan was a passion of his. Bill had many friends at Point Nipigon and the Detroit area, spanning all generations. Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Roberta (Bert) Platten, his parents Arthur John and Mary Louise Platten and his three brothers, Jack, Peter and Tommy Platten. Surviving are his children Elizabeth Marie (John) Bresnahan of Atlanta, GA; Mary Kathyrne Rosenbaugh (Don Chavez) of Cheboygan, MI; Martha Lynne (J. Tracy) Bodenhamer of Overland Park, KS; Patricia Aileen (Philip) Campbell of Melbourne, Australia; William Joseph (Wendy) Platten II of Pewaukee, WI and Peter Robert Platten of Glen Ellyn, IL; Bill’s grandchildren Claire (Rhys Brennan), Carolyn and Michael Bresnahan; Thomas, Daniel (Athena) and Matthew (Meg) Rosenbaugh; Sydney Fehr (Caleb) and Spence Bodenhamer; Amy, Andrew and Natalie Campbell; William, Charles and Emmy Platten; and Dillon Platten. Bill is also survived by his great-granddaughter Mina, brother-in-law Robert Massey and many beloved Platten, Hurlbert and Nipigon nieces and nephews. Bill was a larger than life personality and will be greatly missed. Memorial Service: A celebration of life will be held during the summer of 2024 at Point Nipigon Resort Club.
