Dr. Eugene Charles Herzog died peacefully in Petoskey, MI on August 28, 2015 at the age of 87 with his loving wife of 63 years at his side comforting him.

Eugene is survived by his wife Sally Ann; 8 children, Paula Herzog of Petoskey, John (Mary) Herzog of New Hampshire, Joan Herzog of South Portland, ME, Mary (Ed) Carter of Nashville, Christopher (Justine) Herzog of Fenton, Teresa Herzog-Mourad (Roger) of Ann Arbor, Vincent (Kelley) Herzog of Falmouth, ME and Stephen Herzog and Steven Field of Minneapolis,15 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers Dr. John Herzog, Peter Herzog and his sister Mary Emberger.

Eugene Charles Herzog was born on Feb 15, 1928 in Brainerd, MN to Dr Eugene and Ann (Schneider)Herzog. After completing high school and College at St Johns University, He entered medical School in Des Moines, IA. Following his graduation he married Sally Ann Jedlicka in 1952. He completed his internship in Detroit, spent several years in Family Practice, then went on to complete an orthopedic residency in Columbus, OH. He Practiced Orthopedic Surgery in Flint, MI for over 30 years, until he retired in 1988. He founded the orthopedic surgery residency program at Flint Osteopathic Hospital/Genesys that continues to train excellent surgeons today. His career as a gifted and innovative surgeon helped countless people in southern Michigan.

In addition to being an outstanding physician, surgeon, husband and father, Dr Gene was a true connoisseur, gourmet cook and music loving naturalist. He planted hundreds of thousands of trees in his lifetime, gave generously to The Nature Conservancy and always had a perfect garden. He collected flags from countries around the world during his travels with his wife. He was a sailor, an excellent skier, a handball champion, and a skilled Bocci ball player. He was perpetual student and a voracious reader. The spirit of his versatile and multifaceted life outside of work was focused on fun. He hosted magnificent parties and picnics and developed many great friendships.

A funeral will be held 11:00 AM Monday August 31st  at St. Augustine Church in Boyne Falls with visitation being held from 10:00 AM until the time of service.
