Irene Martha (Swan) Athey

Irene Martha Athey, 92 of Afton, passed away on August 13, 2017 at Tendercare of Cheboygan.

Irene was born on September 4, 1924 in Gladwin, MI, the daughter of Edward Swan and Charlotte (Bishop) Swan. She grew up in Legrand and attended Wildwood Elementary School and Onaway High School.

On September 22, 1941 she married Dale Athey in Clare, MI. Irene was involved in the Afton Aids, helping to provide funeral and wedding luncheons. She was also a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary as well as a senior companion for many years. She loved crocheting and quilting. Irene was a devout member of the Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints Church in Cheboygan.

Irene is survived by two children Barbara Fanko and Edward Athey, daughter-in-law Carol Athey, seventeen grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and many great-great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband Dale Athey, her parents Edward and Charlotte Swan, sons Charles Athey, David Athey, Robert Athey, and Richard Athey, grandsons Brady Green and Michael Fanko, and siblings Bessie Crandle, Otis Swan, Avis Morgan, Ethel Pecham, Nora Ormsbe, Harley Swan, and Thelma Parrot.

A graveside service will be held for Irene on Sunday, August 20th at 1pm at the Walker Township Cemetery. The Reverend Yvonne Lashuay will be officiating.
