Judith R. Mercer

Judith R. Mercer, age 76 of Cheboygan passed away Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at Hiland Cottage in Petoskey. She was born November 23, 1938 in Cheboygan, the daughter of Millard and Violet (Duffiney) Reynolds. On August 2, 1959 in Cheboygan, Judy married Gene Gibbons who preceded her in death in 1996. On August 17, 2002 Judy married Garrett Mercer in Cheboygan and he survives.

Judy graduated from Cheboygan High School where she played trombone with the marching band that marched across the Mackinac Bridge in the inaugural bridge walk. She received her teaching certificate from Michigan State University and taught in a one room school house in Greenville, MI as well as substitute teaching in the East Lansing School District. She had also worked as a Senior Sales Associate at Dillard’s Department Store in Austin, TX where she had lived for 15 years. Judy enjoyed reading, traveling and long walks on the beach.

Beside her husband Garret, Judy is survived by her two sons, Brent (Maureen) Gibbons of San Diego, CA and Eric (Alison) Gibbons of Austin, TX, her sister, Patsy Weber of Cheboygan, granddaughters, Stacie Pirone and Jenny Gibbons of San Diego, CA and her step-daughter, Pam Wilson of Marshall, MI.  

Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time. Memorial contributions may be directed to Hiland Cottage in Petoskey.  Arrangements are being handled by the Nordman-Christian Funeral Home.
