Marjory Helen (Low) Spalding

Marjory Helen Spalding, 95 of East Jordan, died November 26, 2016 at Mallard Cove Assisted Living in Petoskey.

Marjory was born on October 13, 1921 in Grand Rapids, the daughter of Joseph and Helen Low. Marjory grew up in East Grand Rapids and attended school at East Grand Rapids High School. After graduating high school, Marjory enrolled at Michigan State College where she obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Home Economics and Design. Marjory then moved to New York to attend Traphagen School of Design.

On October 5, 1943, she married Donald Porter Spalding in New Rochelle, New York.

Together, they started a family and moved to Lansing, Battle Creek and eventually Petoskey in 1976. They built a home on Lake Charlevoix in 1992 and lived out the rest of their lives there together.

As a young girl, Marjory enjoyed swimming, biking, horseback riding and ballroom dancing. As a mother, Marjory loved being involved in her children's activities and school projects. Later in life, she found enjoyment in gardening beautiful flowers and vegetables and sewing. Marjory was a member of the American Association of University Women and the Red Hats. She was a lifelong Episcopalian; a member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Petoskey for over 30 years, she was a member of the church Alter Guild, Episcopal Church Women's Group, helped with wedding planning, kitchen volunteer and everything in between. Marjory and her husband, Donald, were instrumental in starting Nativity Episcopal Church in Boyne City.

Marjory is survived by her children, Gary Spalding of New Gloucester, Maine, Cynthia A. (Jim) Corbin of Okemos, Michigan and Pamela D. Spalding of Petoskey, Michigan; daughter-in-law, Janet Griffin; 8 grandchildren, Brett Spalding, Andy Ireland, Audrey (Steve) Rodgers, Isaac Ireland, Emileigh Ireland, Abigail Ireland, Austin Corbin and Laura Corbin; as well as 12 great grandchildren.

Marjory is preceded in death by her husband, Donald; and her son, Jim Spalding.

There will be a funeral service on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at Emmanuel Episcopal at 11:00 a.m. with a visitation starting at 10:30 a.m. Burial will take place at Greenwood Cemetery immediately following the service. If you are a member of the Red Hats, please feel free to wear your hat to the funeral.
