Charles Bert Cartwright passed away on April 11, 2017 at the age of 93. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. He will be missed by all who knew him.Charles is survived by his four children: Jane Platte (Bruce) of Petoskey,

Nancy Rondel (Mark) of Harbor Springs, Suzie Beer (Doug) of Harbor Springs,and Jim Cartwright (Jorge) of San Francisco, California. Also, he is survived by nine grandchildren: Jamie Platte (Marc), Julie Platte-Yurek (Matt), Beau Platte (Keely), Peter Platte (Chelsea), Cassie Rondel Asencio (Pedro), Luke Rondel (Lauren), Audrey Lustgarten (Barry), Trevor Church (Kayla), and Alie Church. He has five surviving great grandchildren: Elliot Yurek, Finnley Yurek, Alyssa Lustgarten, Colin Lustgarten, and Tiago Asencio.

Charles was born on August 10, 1923 in Mesilla Park, New Mexico. He spent most of his youth and teenage years in Ohio, and served in the Navy in World War II. He met his wife, JoAnne, in 1946 in a Spanish class at Eastern Michigan University. They married in 1950 and spent their life in Ann Arbor, Michigan until 1989.When he retired from the University of Michigan his profession took them to Washington D.C. for 7 years. They moved to Petoskey, Michigan in 1995 to be near their daughters and grandchildren and remained there for the rest of their lives.

Charles attended Cleary College, Eastern Michigan University, and the University of Michigan. He worked as a dentist in private practice and as a professor of Dentistry at the University of Michigan. He also served as Assistant Dean of the Dental School. He was a member of the Michigan State Board of Dentistry and the Northeast Regional Board of Dentistry. He was very active in many aspects of his profession, including time spent on Project Hope in Brazil.

In addition to his professional life, Charles enjoyed many other activities including painting and gemology. He made many quilts with his sister, Louise, to share with his family. His later years were spent at Perry Farm Village where he was very content to share his life with JoAnne, everyone at Perry Farm and his family. Most of all, he enjoyed the times when he was surrounded by his family.

Charles will be remembered for his devotion to his loving wife, JoAnne, and his entire family. Also, his deep concern, gentle guidance and generosity for the well being of all those who were fortunate enough to know him.

JoAnne Virginia Cartwright passed away on April 8, 2017 at the age of 88.

She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
She was a beloved friend to many who will dearly miss her presence in their lives.

JoAnne is survived by her four children: Jane Platte (Bruce) of Petoskey,
Nancy Rondel (Mark) of Harbor Springs, Suzie Beer (Doug) of Harbor Springs, and Jim Cartwright (Jorge) of San Francisco, California. JoAnne Virginia Draper was born on August 11, 1928 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  She lived there until she graduated from High School. She met her husband, Charles Cartwright, in 1946 in Spanish class at Eastern Michigan University. They married in 1950 and spent their life in Ann Arbor, Michigan until 1989. When her husband retired from the University of Michigan they moved to the Washington D.C. area. JoAnne and Charles moved to Petoskey, Michigan in 1995 to be near their daughters and grandchildren and remained there for the rest of their lives. The family had a summer cottage in Bay View from 1970-1995. JoAnne was engaged in many activities in her life, including being a homemaker, owning and running the Newel Post Antique Store in Conway Mi. in the 1980’s and being involved with women’s church groups. She enjoyed making prayer shawls for people in need, and helping others in many ways.

In her later years, she lived at Perry Farm Village. She enjoyed all of her friends, the wonderful staff and the activities offered there. She especially enjoyed her bridge and euchre groups and the delicious meals in the dining room. She deeply loved music and enjoyed playing the organ throughout her life. She enjoyed celebrating any occasion with her family, or just spending time with them. More than any particular thing JoAnne did, she will be remembered for her kindness and patience, her ability to understand others and uplift their spirits,
and most of all her smile. Just by being herself, she made the world a better, more loving place for all who were blessed to be a part of her life. 

A memorial service for Charles and JoAnne Cartwright is planned for June 18, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Harbor Springs.
