Evelyn R. (Atherton) Knaffle

Evelyn R. Knaffle, age 80, of Cheboygan passed away Saturday, February 18, 2017 at her home. She was born April 16, 1936 in Flint, the daughter of Loran and Lillian (Wildfong) Atherton. In February of 1972, Evelyn married the love of her life, Bill Knaffle and he preceded her in death on June 10, 1997.

Evelyn had worked as a kitchen aide at Green Meadows (now Tendercare) for 15 years. She enjoyed reading, doing word puzzles and attending exercise class at McLaren Hospital.

Survivors include her son, Dennis Edwards of Cheboygan, her brother, Richard Atherton and her sister, Susan Carter, both of Cheboygan, one grandson, Jason Merchant of Cheboygan, three great grandchildren, Julia Martinek and Tyler and Taylor Merchant, her great niece, whom she loved like a daughter, Stephanie (Chris) Bellanca and their son, Gavin of MD, sister-in-law, Lo-Ann (Tim) Bur and their children, Aaron, Allison and Maria, brother-in-law, Jerry (Dee) Knaffle and her lifelong friends, Pete and Denise Smith and Debbie Spencley. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Laurie Merchant, three brothers, Ronald, Gordon and Frank Atherton, three sisters, Florence Landrie, Barbara Linton and Ann Harvey, her niece, Brenda Harvey, mother and father-in-law, Art and Bernice Knaffle and her former husband, Charles Edwards.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, march 11, 2017 at 1:00 PM at the Nordman-Christian Funeral Home with the family greeting friends one hour prior to the service.

Two dear bright eyes, a tender smile,

A loving heart that knew no guile.

Deep trust in God that all was right,

Her joy to make some other bright.

If sick or suffering one she knew,

Some gentle act of love she’d do.

No thought of self, but of others,

I know He said, “Well done, Dear Mother.”
