John Donald "Jack" Bacon

January 4, 1920 – April 28, 2015

 

Jack passed away peacefully on the evening of April 28th, 2015 at the age of 95.  He enjoyed a long and active life; boating with his longtime buddies and even playing tennis into his late eighties.  He was fun loving and enjoyed socializing, playing bridge was a favorite pastime.   As an active member of his community he once made a bid for state congress, and served a number of sports councils.  He was a long time member of Holy Family Catholic Church, where he served on a number of church boards.  He was also a member of the Lions club, Elks club, and American Legion. 

 

Jack was born in Flint, Michigan the son of Julia Nuelle and Leonard Bacon.  He was a graduate of St. Matt’s Catholic High School where he served as Class President; over the years he planned and enjoyed many reunions with his classmates.  Jack went on to play football at the University of Detroit, and for a short time he played football in a semi-pro league. 

 

During World War II he enlisted with the United States Army and was assigned to the Army Air Corps eventually earning the rank of Tec Sergeant.  He was sent to North Africa and was stationed in Casablanca, Morocco.

 

Following the war he met and married his wife of 65 years, Mary Lou Graham.  Soon they has six children and moved to Grand Blanc after outgrowing their home in Flint.  He spent most of his career in sales and customer service, first dealing in automobiles and then carpet and furniture.  Jack and Mary Lou moved to Petoskey in their latter years.  As members of St. Francis Church there, Jack volunteered weekly at Brother Dan’s Food Pantry. 

 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou and son, Douglas.  Survived by sons Michael (Jane) Bacon of Cheboygan, MI and John (Cheryl Perko) Bacon of Alexandria, VA.  and daughters Charlene (Lyne) Cook of Stuart, FL, and Barbara (Ron Sacchi) Bacon of Pleasanton, CA and Mary (Peter Belanger) Bacon of Oakland, CA., also 10 Grandchildren and 4 Great Grandchildren.

 

Memorial mass will be held at St. Francis Catholic Church on August 24th.  Burial will take place at Greenwood Cemetery in Petoskey.
