I was so sorry to hear of the passing of my very favorite teacher EVER ! I loved going to band and having such an inspirational person teach me music and marching band. I have very fond memories of that time in my life and of him. So blessed to have known him. And we were a kick ass marching band because of him. May you have comfort knowing how much he was loved. Rest peacefully Music Man!

I had Larry as my high school band director in Decatur. He was a great teacher, kind, and fun. I have many fond memories of band class. You have my thoughts and prayers. God be with you and your family.

Such fond memories like others, especially of our trip to USA and touring with his mother Lily from her home in Indiana to Virginia to meet up with our other cousins, Alan & David and a beautiful picture of them all together. We were always hoping he might re-visit his mother's native land and us in the process along with Pam in the UK. Sadly that will now never be - rest in peace Larry.

I was sorry to hear about Larry's death. I enjoyed working with him while we were teaching in Onaway. It was so thoughtful of him when he gave the library a biography of one of the mushers from the Iditarod after visiting Alaska. His smile and laugh will always be with us.

To Larry's family, a GREAT person has left this life to the next, may you find peace in his memories of all the great things he was as a person. Always wish I could have met up with him again to tell him just how much he meant to me as a director and a person, but it didn't happen. "BHS 75-79"

I am truly sorry for your loss, please accept my sincere condolences. I hope the Shaffer family will find some comfort and strength in Jesus promise of the earthly resurrection (Acts 24:15, John 5:28, 29) and the renewed Paradise earth, where death is an enemy (1 Corinthians 15:26) that will very soon be eleminated forever, and no family will mourn the death of a loved one (Revelation 21:3,4). This promise has been given by Almighty God Jehovah (Psalms 83:18). Truly, what a glorious and almost unbelievable day that will be! It's a reality though for God cannot lie (Titus 1:2). For more comforting and encouraging scriptures on the resurrection, please visit www.jw.org.

My sincerest condolences to the family, Mr Shaffer had a blast teaching my half notes. (I couldn't read music to save my life) I remember the day after a band concert he'd hand out sodas and put a movie on for class that day, he is a breed of great teachers I'm grateful I had the pleasure of knowing him when I was a young boy trying to be cool by playing the drums.

It was with great sadness that I learnt of Larry’s death. Whilst I have always lived some distance from Larry I do have some happy memories of time spent with him. As a teenager he visited London with his mother and I was designated as his tour guide. Larry, not being a city boy, was very unimpressed with the city sites of my hometown!! In the 1970, when both he and I were studying to be teachers, he was my tour guide when I visited Muncie. On this visit he taught me to water ski. Having emigrated to Australia in 1976 I next visited the US in 2005 but missed seeing Larry as he was busy getting married in Las Vegas! I finally caught up with in him at his brother’s house in Virginia on my next visit in 2008. Whilst I did not share much time with Larry I shall cherish the memories that I have of him.

May he rest in peace.

Such an amazing musician! He made such an impact on so many high school musicians during his tenure at Belmont. The band was a family, and Larry was the pillar of that family. He will be missed by many.
