Vernon G. Hiar, Sr.

Vernon G. Hiar, Sr., age 71, of Levering and Port Orange, FL passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at his home. A longtime former Cheboygan resident, Vern was born May 5, 1945 in Cheboygan, the son of Charles M. and Estelle M. (Orowski) Hiar. He was raised in Levering and graduated from Pellston High School in 1963. On June 20, 1964 at St. Charles Catholic Church in Cheboygan, Vern married Sally Barber.

Vern worked as a machinist at Detroit Tap & Tool for 20 years before going to work in the hotel and restaurant industries in Mackinaw City. He was a gun collector and enjoyed reloading ammunition and had sighted in hundreds of guns over the years. His lifelong love was hunting and fishing….until he found golf. He was a summer member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Larks Lake, Church of Epiphany in Port Orange, FL and the Cheboygan Moose Lodge.

Survivors include his wife Sally of Levering, his son, Vern (Lisa) Hiar, Jr. of Carp Lake and Port Orange, FL, one sister, Darlene (Charles) Dhaseleer of Charlevoix, one brother, Charles (Ruth) Hiar of Elkhart, IN, his step grandson, Chuck Christy of Cheboygan and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Clyde Dimick, one sister and brother-in-law, Mary and John Wheaton, his uncle, Bert Hiar and his beloved dog, Gretchen.

The funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at 11:30 AM at St. Mary/St. Charles Catholic Church with the family greeting friends beginning at 10:00 AM. The Rev. James Gardiner will officiate and burial will take place at Bliss Twp. Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Vern’s name may be directed to the Cheboygan County Humane Society or the Church of Epiphany Food Pantry, 201 Lafayette St., Port Orange, FL 32127.  Arrangements are being handled by the Nordman-Christian Funeral Home.
